Markets have opened on a flat note with a negative bias tracking subdued global cues. The Sensex has shed 17 points to open at 17,367 and the Nifty is down 3 points at 5,251.
The Sensex dropped 207 points to end at 17,362. The Nifty ended down 68 points to 5,221.
The overall breadth ended weak with 1,566 losers and 1,560 gainers on the BSE.
The overall breadth was negative with 1,867 stocks declined and 1,004 advanced.
Overnight, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.4% to 13,253 and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index advanced 0.6% to 1,403 at close.
Realty stocks ended firm on expectations that the central bank will start cutting interest rates in the coming months to prop up slowing economy.
Maruti Suzuki surged over 5% to Rs 1,641. Reliance Infrastructure soared 4.5% to Rs 1,243.
Among major Sensex movers, Reliance Industries soared by 3.29 per cent as energy prices rose due to the war in Ukraine. Tata Steel emerged as the lead gainer among Sensex scrips, jumping by 6.61 per cent. Power Grid, Titan, NTPC, ICICI Bank, L&T, Infosys and Sun Pharma were among the gainers.
Among Sensex shares, Bajaj Finserv fell the most by 4.08 per cent. Bajaj Finance declined by 3.01 per cent, Tata Steel by 2.2 per cent, Wipro by 2.09 per cent, Tata Motors by 1.96 per cent, IndusInd Bank by 1.9 per cent, SBI by 1.75 per cent, Tech Mahindra by 1.66 per cent and HCL Tech by 1.2 per cent. TCS, Infosys, Power Grid, Maruti, Reliance, HDFC twins, L&T, M&M, NTPC and Ultratech Cement were also among the losers.
The NSE Nifty has settled (provisional)17 points down at 5,256. The market breadth was negative, out of 3,005 shares traded, 1,711 declined and 1,165 advanced on the BSE.
The NSE Nifty shut shop at 5,304, down 70 points.

Nifty crossed the 5,100 mark and ended up 108 points at 5,140.
Marketmen said the BSE index tumbled tailing weak Asian peers as concerns grew that a global economic recovery may be rockier than expected after data showed US consumer confidence fell to its lowest since March.
The NSE Nifty ended at 4,514, down 51 points. The Sensex has declined 206 points in the last three days. The market breadth was fairly negative, Out of 2,724 stocks traded, 1,558 stocks declined while 1,089 advanced.
The NSE Nifty ended at 2,620, up 43 points. The BSE IT index surged 3% to 2,072. The Oil & Gas index gained 1.8% at 5,724. On the other hand, the FMCG index dropped 1.7% to 1,854.
The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,724 stocks traded, 1,782 advanced, 858 declined and the rest were unchanged today.
Kotak Bank rose the most among Sensex scrips, spurting 2.92 per cent amid reports that LIC will up its stake in the private lender to 10 per cent. Gains in HCL Tech, TCS, Infosys, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance and Titan helped Sensex close in the green. NSE Nifty edged higher by 27.50 points to end at 17,053.95.

Top laggards in the Sensex pack were Vedanta, IndusInd Bank, Yes Bank, Tata Steel, ONGC, Tata Motors, Sun Pharma, M&M, TCS and Hero MotoCorp, dropping up to 5.39 per cent.
The broader NSE Nifty soared 133.10 points, or 1.22 per cent, to end at 11,573.30.
Among major Sensex movers, Ultratech Cement rose over 4 per cent, Bajaj Finance by 2.63 per cent and Maruti by 2 per cent. BSE Sensex closed up by 133.14 points at a record high of 47,746.22. NSE Nifty rose by 49.35 points at its lifetime high of 13,981.95.
Yes Bank was the biggest gainer in the Sensex pack, soaring 6.04 per cent, followed by IndusInd Bank, Tata Steel, HeroMotoCorp, Sun Pharma, Bajaj Auto, Power Grid, Tata Motors, SBI and Kotak Bank that gained up to 5.32 per cent.
Top other laggards in the Sensex pack included Tata Motors, Maruti, Axis Bank, Bharti Airtel, RIL, NTPC, Bajaj Auto, Asian Paints, ITC, Kotak Bank, Bajaj Finance and TCS, falling up to 5.10 per cent.
Titan was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rising 3.5 per cent, followed by Kotak Bank, SBI, Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj Finance, HUL, Axis Bank and Sun Pharma. On the other hand, NTPC, Tech Mahindra, PowerGrid and Infosys were the laggards.
The broader NSE Nifty gained 17.35 points or 0.16 per cent to end at 10,997.35.
The broader NSE Nifty rose 32.15 points or 0.29 per cent to settle at 11,284.30.
HDFC was the leading gainer among Sensex stocks on Thursday, rising by 1.65 per cent, followed by Sun Pharma, ICICI Bank, Asian Paints, Titan and Infosys. TCS was the biggest loser, shedding 1.33 per cent. Ultratech Cement, Bharti Airtel, Kotak Bank and Tech Mahindra were among the other major laggards.
The S&P BSE Sensex dropped 207 points to end at 25,230.
Tata Motors, Maruti, Tata Steel, Vedanta, Bajaj Auto, IndusInd Bank, SBI, Hero MotoCorp, M&M, Asian Paints, Axis Bank, RIL and L&T too jumped up to 10.21 per cent.
The 50-share Nifty plunged by 134.75 points or 1.23 per cent to close at 10,862.60 points as 38 of its constituents declined.
The broader NSE Nifty sank 252.55 points, or 2.14 per cent, to 11,558.60.
